Prof. H. M. Bello
Brief Biography
Prof H.M. Bello started his academic career as a Graduate Assistant with the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria, in 1983 and progressively rose through the academic ladder to full professor in 2009. He was a Fulbright Fellow at Texas A&M University, in 1985 as a staff of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. In 2003, he secured a joint Fellowship of the Association of African Universities (AAU) and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) where he served at the Faculty of Agriculture of the National University of Lesotho (NUL) as an AAU/DAAD Fellow. He returned to NUL in 2004 this time, at the Department of Economics from where he subsequently went to serve at the Centre for Rural Development (CRD) at Walter Sisulu University (WSU), in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in 2010 before joining the University of Namibia in 2013 where he served as HOD for Postgraduate Studies. In 2021, Prof Bello was back at the National University of Lesotho where he once again briefly served in the Department of Economics until November 2022. He has since resumed duty at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University in December 2022. In January 2024, the Vice Chancellor appointed him as the Head of Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development in the Faculty of Agriculture. During his academic career, he held few academic leadership responsibilities including serving as Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension; Faculty of Agriculture Examinations Officer; Deputy Director Academic Planning, all at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. He was Postgraduate Coordinator, Department of Economics at the National University of Lesotho; Deputy Director, CRD at the WSU; and the Head of Department, Postgraduate Studies at the University of Namibia. He taught and supervised students of Agricultural Economics, Economics and MBA at the Namibia Business School of the University of Namibia from 2015 to 2023. He has a cumulative total of over 100 refereed journal papers, conference proceedings, chapters in books, conference presentations and monographs. His area of interests are in: natural and environmental resource economics, social issues and welfare economics, marketing, microeconomics, statistical and quantitative techniques as well as managerial economics.
