Prof. S.H Wara
Brief Biography
Sanusi Hassan Wara graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Usmanu Danfodiyo University (U.D.U.) Sokoto, Nigeria in 1992, M.Sc. in Biochemistry (Drug metabolism and Toxicology) from University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from U.D.U., Sokoto in 2006. His teaching career started in 1994 as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Biochemistry, U.D.U., Sokoto. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2013 with specialization in Ethno- pharmacology/Biochemical Pharmacology and Toxicology. Professor Wara is an accomplished academic with thirty (30) years of teaching and research experience. His current areas of research are risk assessment and pharmacological profiles of locally used medicinal plants, drug metabolism, molecular docking, Isolation and characterization of active compounds of hepato-protective, anticancer, anti- ulcerogenic, anti-hypertensive, anti-diabetic and anti-sickling plants and their mechanisms of action. He has supervised over ninety (90) undergraduate, fifteen (15) M.Sc. and six (6) Ph.D. students and served as an external examiner to undergraduate, M.Sc. and Ph.D. students for many state and Federal Universities in Nigeria. He is also an external examiner for Ph.D. students to the University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa and Management and Science University, Malaysia. He is a member of professional bodies such as Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Nigerian Society of Experimental Biology. He has ninety nine (99) publications in peer reviewed journals to his credit and was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow, India in 2010/2011. He is a reviewer to many national and international journals such as Research Journal of Medicinal Plants, Nigerian Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Nigerian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences, International Journal of Pharmacology etc. He attended and presented many papers at national and international conferences and workshops in Asia, United Arab Emirates and Africa. He served as Departmental Examination Officer(2007-2009), Acting Head of Department (2011-2013), Deputy Dean Postgraduate School (2014-2016), Director Academic Planning (2016-2020), member Procurement Committee (2017-2020), member Resource Verification Committee to Federal and States Colleges of Education for affiliation of degree programs (2016-2020), member Junior Staff and Promotion Committee, Faculty of Science (2004-2012) and Chairman Audit Committee, Sokoto Multipurpose Cooperative Society (2021 to date) U.D.U., Sokoto.
