Civil Engineering

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING IN BRIEF
Engineering is the process of developing natural resources to best and maximum utilization of mankind with minimum effort. Civil engineering on the order hand is perhaps the first engineering that mankind evolved and nearest to attributes of our nature and culture and it covers a wide spectrum of subjects in very wide perspective.
Civil Engineering Department was established in November, 2016 during the 2016/2017 academic session, as an autonomous Department in the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Design, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The main objective was to offer opportunity for great breadth of learning whereby civil engineers with proven engineering abilities can be produced for the country. The pioneer staff of the Department comprises of Seven (6) Lecturers, Five (5) Technologies and Four (4) Administrative. The Dean, that break new ground for the faculty is Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo OON, MPON,(Shettiman Gabas Zazzau), former DG Energy Commission of Nigeria(ECN), former V.C. ATBU.
The First Head of Department who is serving on acting capacity is Engr. Muhammad Tayyib Bello MNSE, R-COREN. The pioneer set of Civil Engineering students numbering twelve (12), were admitted into part one during the 2017/2018 session after having successfully scored the required UTME point and satisfied the university requirement for the programme. The Department is to run a 5-year bachelor degree (B.Eng.) Civil Engineering programme. Students are admitted into level one through the Senior Secondary School Certificate, the National Examination Council (NECO), O’ level or any other approved certificate.
In order to produce intellectual and practical oriented graduates who can combine their skills to create safe and economic designs which must be environmentally and socially acceptable to the society in which we live, the Department of Civil Engineering ensures that in addition to sound theoretical background, students will be thoroughly exposed to extensive and relevant laboratory experimentation and exercises. Their practical skills, that will be developed in the central workshop and the Civil Engineering Laboratories will be complemented by industrial visits during vacations, 8weeks Students Work Experience Programme (SWEP) in Level II, a 3-month supervised Industrial Training SIWES I in Level III and a 6 months supervised, Student Industrial Works Experience Scheme (SIWES II) in Level IV will be conducted in the whole of second semester of the session.
This will help the students to relate academic work with practical industrial realities and capabilities. The overall goal of the Department is to produce Civil Engineers who are relevant to the engineering manpower requirement in the public and private sector of the economy and who can initiate as well as carry out engineering designs, engage in industrial management and pursue research and development.
The Department of Civil Engineering is dedicated to educating undergraduate students in the diverse disciplines represented within its degree programs. These include:
- Geotechnical
- Structures
- Transportation
- Water Resources
- Environmental
