Prof. A. A. Aliero


Brief Biography

Professor Adamu Aliyu Aliero was born in Aliero Town, Jega Local Government Area in the former Sokoto State on 19th Novermber, 1967. He had his early education from Aliero Model Primary School and Government Science Secondary School Yelwa Yauri. He obtained the National Certificate in Education from the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1989. He began his teaching career as a Science Teacher in 1991. Adamu obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany.from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto in 1995 with a Second Class Upper and was empoyed as a Graduate Assistant in 1996. He obtained MSc Botany (Plant Breeding and Genetics) at the University of Ilorin. In 2004, he was awarded a Grant Holder Linked Bursary by the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) to pursue a Doctorate Degree Programme in Botany at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa where he graduated in 2006. He rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Plant Physiology in 2013. As part of his contribution to knowledge, he has published more than 152 peer reviewed articles both in International and National Journals and with over 40 conference papers in the areas of Plant Physiology/Genetics and Phytomedicine. In addition to journal articles, he has published three books tittles and many book chapters. He has supervised 75 MSc dissertations and 15 PhD theses with many ongoing postgraduate students. On Google Scholar, Professor Adamu Aliyu Aliero is a Professor of Plant Physiology with over 1759 cumulative citations for his 143 online publications with h-index 22 and i10-index 52. He is a pioneer Editor-in-Chief to the Savanna Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences and also Editor-in-Chief to the Nigerian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences Aliero has held several appointments in the University. He was the Departmental Examination Officer, Postgraduate coordinator, Head of Botany Programme, Head of Biological Sciences Department, Faculty Examination Officer, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Science and Dean of Student Affairs Division. He also Chaired the following commitees, Board of Trustee on Mrs and Prof. S.H.Z. Naqvi Scholarship, Departmental Accreditation Commitee, Curriculum Review Committee of undergraduate and posrgraduate programmes in Biology and Botany- Examination Misconduct Committee, Space Allocation and Time Table Committee, University Landscaping Committee, Ad-hoc Committee on Safety and Environment, Environmental monitoring Committee, University Prize and Scholarship Committee, Digital ID Card Committee. Minimarket Development Committee and also the chairman Computer Based Test examination . He is also a Member to Committee on Social Ethics,Committee on Electricity and Diesel Consumption in the University, Committee on Servicom Compliance Evaluation, Honorary Degrees Committee and on Committee on FGN visitation exercise, Chairman University Press Editorial Commitee He was a consultant on biodiversity and Stakeholder to Surame Cultural Landscape and Associated sites, subsidiary of the National Museum and Monument, Abuja. He also served as an External Examiner and assessor to many Universities within and ouside Nigeria, resources person to National Univesities Commisions, Member and chairman to NUC accrediattion panel to undergraduate programmes in plant biology, botany and plant science programmes. Aliero was a lead paper presenter at the just concluded conference of the Botanical Society of Nigeria held at Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, where he spoke on plant and environment for sustainable development. Aliero is a Fellow, Strategic Institute for Natural Resources and Human Development (FRHD), and a recipient of leadership award by the Unified Nigerian Youth Forum (UNYF), humanitarian award by Rotaract Club and award of excellence by Association of Northern Nigeria Students (ANNS). Aliero was an assessor on research proposal and ratings of researches for the National Research Foundation, South Africa, South African Research Chair on Indigenous Plant Use, Chair in Phytomedicine Five Year Review of the South African Research Chairs Initiative. He was also a member to Kebbi State Scholarship Board and many community based associations. He was a Council Member of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and its current President, Dean Faculty of Science, Federal University Birnin Kebbi.and Head of Plant Sciences at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Prof. Aliero is a member to many professional bodies like, Botanical Society of Nigeria. Genetics Society of Nigeria, South African Association of Botanist, International Society of Ethnobiology, Plant Protection Society of Nigeria, Science Association of Nigeria, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria, World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies, Society for Medicinal Plants and Economic Development (SOMPED), Garden Conservation International, Kew He also served as a member to the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board for the Appointment of Registrar and the Vice Chancellor, Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Member, Tetfund Implementation, Supervision and Monitoring Committee, Federal University Birnin Kebbi, a visiting Professor with Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero and a member to the Advisory Board of many scientific Journals. Prof. Aliero is also a Fellow African Scientific Institute (FASI) Prof. Aliero is married with five children
