DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS IN BRIEF
Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension was one of the pioneer Departments of the Faculty of Agriculture, created through the University 15th Senate meeting approval held on the 27th June and 5th July, 1979. However, the Faculty took off in 1980/81 session. The Faculty awarded a composite degree in Agriculture. Considering the need for specialization of student right from first Degree, the University Senate approved the splitting of the erstwhile Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension into two separate Departments (Department of Agricultural Economics and Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development) in 2011/2012 session.
The Department of Agricultural Economics being a service oriented Department has been very active in a teaching and research. The Department of Agricultural of applied Economics in the field of agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Currently, apart from the composite degree programme, the Department is running PhD, M.Phil and Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Economics and extension progammes. In terms of community service, the Department over decades undertook a number of studies/surveys for E.U and World Bank through Fadama III and IFAD, WAAP Programmes. Recently, the Department collaborated with Africa Rice through Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria TRIMING Project for the training of two students to pursue M.Sc and PhD programmes. In terms of human resources, the Department is blessed with 3 tenure and 3 visiting Professors, 1 Reader, 3 Senior Lecturers , 1 Lecturer 1 and Lecturer II each and 6 supporting staff.
