Doctor of Philosophy in Fisheries
Philosophy
The Fisheries sub-sector contributes to the development of Nigeria’s economy as a source of animal protein and other fish by-products for man and livestock, by providing opportunities for employment, income, and earning of foreign exchange. However, sustainable fish production through conservation and management of the fishery resources and development of aquaculture demand adequately trained manpower in all facets of the operations. Therefore, the Doctor of Philosophy in Fisheries is designed to produce competent scientists and researchers for universities and research centres as well as the public and private sectors.
Aim and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to train students and develop high-level manpower to work in the fisheries industries.
The objectives are to:
- Preparing the students for independent researches in fisheries.
- To improve the skills of the professional personnel who are already employed in the industry especially in teaching and research.
Admission Requirements
i. Five O’ level credit passes including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry and two relevant Science subjects
ii. Bachelor’s degree (B. Fisheries) in Fisheries not below Second Class Lower Division of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognised institution.
iii. Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognized institution CGPA 4.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.
iv. In addition to i – iii above, candidates must satisfy the Usmanu Danfodiyo University matriculation requirements.
Any other qualification acceptable to the Board of the Postgraduate School and the Senate of the University.
Mode of Study
The Ph.D. Fisheries programme is run Full-time and shall be by research or by course and research.
Duration
Full-Time: Minimum of 36 calendar months and maximum of 48 calendar months.
Part-Time: Minimum of 48 calendar months and maximum of 60 calendar months.

Graduation Requirements
- Full Time: Submit and defend a research proposal within 18 months of first registration, where the defense was not successful, it shall be before the expiration of 24 months from first registration
- Part Time: Submit and defend a research proposal within 24 months of first registration, where the defense was not successful, it shall be before the expiration of 36 months from first registration.
Failure to present and defend the proposal within the specified time, the candidate shall be withdrawn.
- Register and pass 48 Credit units of taught courses
Courses Units Core Courses 21 Elective 9 Thesis 16 Seminar 3 Total *48 - Student shall defend a thesis of 16 credit units before a panel of internal and external examiners and the thesis shall be graded.
- Present a minimum of three (3) seminars, at most one per semester.
