DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND ENVIROMENT IN BRIEF

This University commenced training in Agriculture, with Forestry and Fisheries as an integral part, during 1980/81 session. The agricultural curriculum of the University was unique then, compared to that of the other universities in the country, by incorporating these two components. However, the NUC introduced Approved Minimum Standards for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Home Economics in 1989. The curriculum in general Agriculture was adopted in this University during 1989/90 session, but two courses only (one each in Forestry and Fisheries) were introduced at 300 level. The 1993/94 session completed the old agriculture programme of the University. Considering the importance of Forestry and Fisheries sciences to food production in the Northern part of Nigeria and the catchment area of the University in particular, and in consonance with the orientation of training of high level manpower in the different areas of agriculture and the resources and manpower developed over a decade and half, the undergraduate programmes in Bachelor of Forestry (B. Forestry) and Bachelor of Fisheries (B. Fisheries) was approved by the Senate in April, 1996. These two degree programmes commenced 1999/2000 academic session.Last quarter of 2014 saw the bifurcation of the Department into two programmes namely; Forestry and Environment as well as Fisheries and Aquaculture in August 2014.
