Master of Science in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture
Philosophy
The Fisheries sub-sector contributes to the development of Nigeria’s economy as a source of animal protein and other fish by-products for man and livestock, by providing opportunities for employment, income, and earning of foreign exchange. However, sustainable fish production through conservation and management of the capture fisheries resources and development of aquaculture demand adequately trained manpower in all facets of the operations. Therefore, the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture is designed to provide opportunities for advanced academic and professional training to those who are already employed in the fisheries industry, research centres as well as public service and private sector.
Aim and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to train students to be advanced academic and professional fisheries scientists. The objectives are:
i. Preparing the students for higher degrees in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture
ii. Exposing the students to advanced courses and improve their research skills through the conduct of supported research.
iii. Developing the skills for the application of fisheries and aquaculture techniques and imparting capacity for scientific communication.
Admission Requirements
i. Five O’ level credit passes including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry and two relevant Science subjects
ii. Bachelor’s degree (B. Fisheries) in Fisheries not below Second Class Lower Division of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognised institution.
iii.In addition to i – ii above, candidates must satisfy the Usmanu Danfodiyo University matriculation requirements.
Any other qualification acceptable to the Board of the Postgraduate School and the Senate of the University.
Mode of Study
The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture programme is run Full-time and shall be by course and research to be embodied in a dissertation.
Duration
Full-Time: Minimum of 24 calendar months and maximum of 36 calendar months.
Part-Time: Minimum of 36 calendar months and maximum of 48 calendar months.
As may be determined by the University from time to time.

Graduation Requirements
i. Register and pass 18 credit units of core courses and 6 credit units elective
ii. Present two (2) seminars, at most one per semester
iii. Defend a dissertation of 12 credit units before a panel of internal and external examiners.
