History and International Studies
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of History is one of the pioneer Departments of the Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies and the University. It started in 1977 with an intake of 10 Students, three Lecturers including Professor Aghbodeka as Head of Department. In 1981 following the completion of the new Faculty of Arts building at the permanent site, the Department moved to the permanent site. Since 1981 when the Pre-Degree Program was undertaken, student enrollment has risen markedly. Between 1981 and 1985 the level of enrollment recorded a significant increase, with over 50 students admitted annually. Since 1990 the Department has graduated between 60 and 80 students every year.
The Department offers Courses at Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels. The Post-graduate Program, which started in 1984, has so far produced more than one hundred and Fifty (150) M.A and Fifty (50) Ph.D Graduates in History. The Department has also since the beginning of 2004/2005 session introduced additional Postgraduate Courses that include: Post Graduate Diploma in Migration and Refugee Studies (PGDMRS), Post Graduate Diploma in African and Development Studies (PGDADS), Masters in International Studies (MIS) and M Phil Degree in History.
Our Vision
The vision of the department of history is to widen students’ experience and develop qualities of perception and judgment. This is by providing a sense of the past, an awareness of the development of differing values, systems and societies and the inculcation of critical yet tolerant personal attitudes.
Our Mission
The mission of the department is to give students thorough understanding of Nigerian history and Historiography planted firmly in the context of African history and historiography. This is to be achieved through the following objectives;
i. Educating students on historical movements of global importance from other countries to enable them acquire better knowledge of the world and thus enhance their understanding of the multiple human, economic, social and political problems and to confront them.
ii. Making students comprehend the historical forces of change and development which have shaped and are still shaping the lives of people of Nigeria, Africa and the World.
iii. Developing a sense of commitment and capacity to consciously relate to their environments and developments in such a way that Nigerian and African Unity, peace and prosperity can be achieved.
iv. To provide the students with advantages usually associated with historical training, viz: critical and analytical faculty and balanced judgment needed particularly in administrative and managerial responsibilities.
