DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS IN BRIEF

The B. Sc. Degree programme in statistics started with the establishment of the Statistics Unit in 1992. Prior to this, the Department of Mathematics had the tradition of offering comprehensive courses in statistics and operations research as part of its B. Sc. programme in Mathematics. Over the period from 1975 to 1992 the Department of Mathematics produced B. Sc Mathematics graduates whose major options were in Statistics and operations research. The establishment of Statistics Unit is an upgrade of the Department’s rich tradition in response to the Federal/States needs for specialized manpower in Statistics and Operations research.

The Statistics Unit of the Department offers a four-year programme leading to a B. Sc Honours Degree in Statistics with a view to produce competent statisticians in both theory and practical statistics.  The first batch of graduates of the programme passed out at the end of 1996/1997 session. Since then, the Statistics Unit produced graduates each session and most of them are now in central positions in banks, oil and gas sectors, Universities, National Population Commission, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Federal and States Ministries among others.

The Unit also offers Postgraduate Programme in Statistics with specialization in Tine series, Sampling Survey, Design of Experiment, Applied Statistics, Quality Control, Survival Analysis and Pattern Recognition leading to the award of Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degrees. However, the Department also offers Post Graduate Diploma in Statistics (PGDS) designed for aspiring candidates with weakness and or from other related areas of specialization an opportunity to qualify for admission into Statistics Unit for M.Sc. programme. 

The B. Sc. programme run by the Unit has successfully received full accreditation in the previous and latest accreditation exercises (2019) from the NUC team assigned for the task (Accredited academic programme; B. Sc Statistics)
