Master of Veterinary Science (MVSC) in Theriogenology
PHILOSOPHY
The inadequate number of specialists in Theriogenology in the country, coupled with an alarming increase in the number of complicated reproduction cases calls for an urgent need for enhanced training of specialists in this area. This programme will enhance production of graduates with higher training and skills in various methods of improved animal reproduction, animal production, and modern techniques that can improve and control reproduction for maximum and high quality yield in our animals. Higher training in Theriogenology will provide specialist training in various methods of clinical, applied reproduction and research. This will help in production of genetically improved animals and consequently high grade genetically improved disease free animals for meat and milk.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Aim:The aim of this programme is to produce professionals with higher knowledge in the areas of Reproduction.
Objectives: The objectives of the programme are:
- Artificial Insemination and Embryo manipulation techniques.
- To conduct basic and applied research on all areas of reproduction and eventually produce specialists that will provide highly trained manpower to, the livestock sub sector.
- To produce specialists in methods of improving reproductive efficiency, through Artificial Insemination, Embryo Transfer, In vitro fertilization, cloning etc
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Five ‘O’ Level credits Passes English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,(DVM) degree or its equivalent from any recognized Institutions
- A related degree of Bachelor of Science with at least a Second Class or its equivalent, accepted to P.G. Board.
- Candidates must satisfy the University’s requirements for matriculation.
- Other requirements as may be required by the Board of Postgraduate School and University Senate
MODE OF STUDY: Full time only by Course work and by research.
DURATION: The Programme will require a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 for full time and 36 calendar months.
TUITION FEES: As determined by the University authorities.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
- Graduates of the programme can be employed in any outfit that deals with Animal reproduction, Animal production, Animal health, Teaching and research institutions, public or private farms.
- They could also be employed in Artificial Insemination Centres or companies, Embryo Transfer Centres or Companies.
- Graduates could also be self-employed in production, Artificial Insemination Services or Embryo Transfer Services.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates registered for this programme will be required to:
- Pass 30 units of core course, 6 units of elective courses
- Present 2 Seminars at most one per semester.
- Defend 12 units Dissertation orally before a panel of internal and external examiners and this shall be graded.
