Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine
DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE IN BRIEF
The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine is devoted to the application of professional veterinary skills, knowledge, and resources for the overall protection and improvement of public health. The training instilled is structured to fully cover the requisite knowledge, promoting healthy animal production, epidemiology of important tropical diseases, environmental health, animal and human population health maintenance, emerging and reemerging diseases, as well as upholding the one health initiative.
The department is composed of multidisciplinary health scientists whose main focus is on improving the health of the population and preventing disease transmission. The department offers Ph.D. degrees in Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Veterinary Medicine as well as Masters Degrees in Veterinary Epidemiology, Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Veterinary Medicine. The department has established a collaborative program with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and The McArthur Foundation to develop a new program in Veterinary Epidemiology whose graduates will work on the frontlines of disease control, emergency preparedness for diseases that cross the human-animal barrier, and food safety.
Our Mission
We are committed to excellence in research and teaching in a friendly and diverse academic environment. We also conduct cutting edged, innovative, and collaborative research in order to understand the cause and mechanisms of health, well-being and disease, and to test and disseminate strategies for health promotion and disease prevention. We also train and empower the next generation of health scientists to address our foremost public health challenges with particular emphasis on antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases and food safety challenges as well as promoting hygienic milk and meat production practice using educational tools, innovation, and research.
Our Vision
The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine is aimed at providing specialized training and advanced scientific knowledge in various fields of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine for improved health and productivity, via quality research and teaching, thus equipping its graduates with the knowledge, and skills that will equip them with the desire to fight against infectious and zoonotic diseases in order to ensure availability of wholesome foods of animal origin to the society.
