M.PHIL. LANGUAGE EDUCATION
Philosophy
The overall philosophy of M. Phil degree in Guidance and Counselling is the development of professional educators who engineer personal and social change through education either as professional teachers, researchers or managers of educational institutions and other relevant organizations.
Aim
The aim of this programme is to train students to acquire knowledge of the field of Guidance and Counselling as it relates to education.
Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Produce high-level professional research workers who will be able to expand the frontiers of Guidance and Counselling knowledge as it applies to the theory and practice of education.
- Produce Guidance and Counsellors who will meet the much needed manpower requirements of Colleges of Education, Universities, Research Institutes, Hospitals, Social welfare Units and Organizations.
- Provide an insight into the ideas and thoughts that have influenced current educational policies and practices from different Guidance and Counselling theories and perspectives.
- Promote better understanding of the link between Guidance and Counselling and Education.
Admission Requirements
The following are qualified for admission into the Master of Philosophy in Guidance and Counselling:
- Five O’Level credit passes in English Languages, Mathematics (where applicable) and any other three relevant subjects.
- Bachelors Degree in (B.Ed, B.A. (Ed), Bsc (Ed) of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or any other recognized institution with a minimum of Second Class Honours Lower Division.
- Master’s degree (M.Ed) of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or any other recognized institution with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale or 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale or its equivalent.
- In addition to i – iii above, candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirements of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
- Any other qualification acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and Senate of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
Mode of Study
There shall be two types of M.Phil programme:
a) M.Phil degree programme. This programme leads to the award of M.Phil degree certificate.
b) M.Phil/PhD programme. Students pursuing this programme are expected to be upgraded to doctoral status (upon satisfying the conditions for the upgrade). The M.Phil/PhD programme shall have two streams:
- M.Phil/PhD for candidates who did not obtain the required grade in their masters degree to commence a PhD programme in the same discipline.
- M.Phil/PhD for those candidates who have masters degree but want to commence a PhD programme in related discipline.
All the two types of M.Phil programme recommended under a & b (1 & 2) shall consist of coursework and research. The coursework shall be made up of 36 units of taught courses, inclusive of 16 units of dissertation.
Duration
i) The duration for M.Phil degree programme shall be a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months if on full time; or a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months if on part time.
ii) The duration for M.Phil/PhD shall be a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months if on full time; or a minimum of 60 calendar months and a maximum of 96 calendar months if on part time. The duration shall be broken down as follows (for full time);
- The first year is for coursework.
- Proposal defense at the end of the second year.
- Consideration for upgrade at the end of the third year.
- Readiness for VIVA at the end of the fourth year.
iii) If a student fails the upgrade, he/she shall sit for VIVA for the award of M.Phil degree.

Graduation Requirements
i) A student pursuing M.Phil/PhD programme under 4.0 b (1) above, may be upgraded to doctoral status upon the recommendations of the Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Committees and the Board of Postgraduate School, as well as approved by the senate. The following conditions must be met before the Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Committees can recommend a candidate:
a) The candidate must have been registered for a minimum of 36 calendar months if on full time, or 48 calendar months if on part time.
b) The student must have successfully completed the coursework.
c) There shall be a satisfactory progress report on the research work (of the candidate) by a panel of three assessors approved by the Board of Postgraduate School. The panel shall comprise the candidate’s Head of Department, major supervisor, and one person from outside the Department other than the Co-Supervisor. The report of the panel must accompany the Faculty’s recommendation to the Postgraduate School.
ii) A student pursuing M.Phil/PhD programme under 4.0 b (2) above, may be upgraded to doctoral status upon the recommendations of the Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Committees and the Board of Postgraduate School, as well as approved by the senate. The following conditions must be met before the Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Committees can recommend a candidate:
a) The candidate must have been registered for a minimum of 36 calendar months if on full time, or 48 calendar months if on part time.
b) The student must have successfully completed the coursework with at least an average of “B” grade.
c) There shall be a satisfactory progress report on the research work (of the candidate) by a panel of three assessors approved by the Board of Postgraduate School. The panel shall comprise the candidate’s Head of Department, major supervisor, and one person from outside the Department other than the Co-Supervisor. The report of the panel must accompany the Faculty’s recommendation to the Postgraduate School.
