Master of Philosophy in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture
Philosophy
The Fisheries sub-sector contributes to the development of Nigeria’s economy as a source of animal protein and other fish by-products for man and livestock, by providing opportunities for employment, income, and earning of foreign exchange. However, sustainable fish production through conservation and management of the fishery resources and development of aquaculture demand adequately trained manpower in all facets of the operations. Therefore, the Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture is designed to upgrade holders of Master of Science degree who have not met the minimum requirements for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programme. The programme would also provide opportunities for advanced academic and professional training for those who are already employed in the fisheries industry, public service or in self employment.
Aim and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to train students to be advance academic and professional training.
The objectives are to:
- Preparing the students for higher degrees in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture.
- Exposing the students to advanced courses and improve their research skills through the conduct of supported research.
- Providing training for those whose future careers lie in teaching and research at the tertiary level and in research and development in the public and private sectors and who meet basic requirements for admission into Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme.
Admission Requirements
i. Five O’ level credit passes including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry and two relevant Science subjects
ii. Bachelor’s degree (B. Fisheries) in Fisheries not below Second Class Lower Division of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognised institution.
iii. Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognized institution CGPA 4.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.
vi. In addition to i – iii above, candidates must satisfy the Usmanu Danfodiyo University matriculation requirements.
Any other qualification acceptable to the Board of the Postgraduate School and the Senate of the University.
Mode of Study
The programme shall run on full-time and part-time bases by research and course work. It consists of two streams.
Stream A:
- Register and pass 12 units of taught courses
- Conduct research work of 12 credit units to be embodied in a dissertation
Stream B
- Register and pass 12 units of taught courses
- Conduct research work of 12 credit units to be embodied in a dissertation
Both streams shall:
- Present two seminar at a most one per semester
- Submit and defend a research proposal
- Submit and defend a dissertation before a panel of internal and external examiners and it shall be graded
Duration
i) The full-time Masters of Philosophy Degree Programme shall run for a minimum duration of eighteen (18) calendar months and maximum of thirty six (36) calendar months.
ii) The part-time Master of Philosophy Degree Programme shall run for a minimum duration of thirty (30) calendar months and maximum period of fourty eight (48) calendar months.
iii) Extension of study may be granted. Such extension should not exceed a period of twelve (12) calendar months for full time and twenty four calendar months for part time and shall be in accordance with the University regulations

Graduation Requirements
The M.Phil programme shall consist of two streams depending on the candidate’s CGPA as follows:
Stream A:
- Register and pass 12 credit units
- Submit and defend a dissertation of 12 credit units before a panel of internal and external examiners
Stream B:
- Registerand pass 24 credit units of course work and defend a dissertation of 12 credit units before a panel of internal and external examiners.
- Present a minimum of two (2) seminar papers, at most one paper per semester.
Upgrade to Ph.D.
Student who successfully completed the programme may be upgraded to Ph.D. level based on the recommendation of the panel of Assessors.
