DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION


PHILOSOPHY

The PhD in Animal Production Programme is designed to produce advanced-level manpower with an appreciable research background in Animal Production, Husbandry and Animal Health.  The philosophy of this programme is to address the surging manpower needs in higher educational Institutions as well as Research Institutions in the fields of Livestock Production.  This programme is designed to facilitate the Specialization In both Practical and Clinical aspects of Animal Production as well as for the enhancement of Research and Development in All Aspects of Animal Science.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of the programme is to produce specialists in Animal Production.

The objectives of the programme are to:-

  1. Produce professional personnel with advanced knowledge in various areas of animal production.
  2. Produce experts in animal husbandry and livestock production practices.
  3. Train candidates in the conduct of basic and applied researches in chosen areas of animal production.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Five ‘O’ Level credit passes in English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
  2. Msc. Theriogenology of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University or Msc. or MVSc of any recognized Institutes.
  3. Msc. animal production or animal science degree of any recognized University with the necessary requirements for admission with at least 4.00 on a 5.0 scale.
  4. M.Phil. programme of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or any recognized University.
  5. Candidates must also satisfy the University’s requirement for matriculation.
  6. Any Qualification(s) acceptable to the Board of postgraduate school and the Senate of the University.

MODE OF STUDY:     The programme will be run both on a full-time and part-time basis through research embodied in a Thesis.

DURATION: Minimum of 36 and a maximum of 60 calendar months for full-time, and a minimum of 48 and a maximum of 84 calendar months for part-time.

TUITION FEES:  As determined by the University from time to time

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

  1. Employment as a lecturer in educational Institutions.
  2. Work as research staff in Agricultural Research Institutes.
  3. Self-employment in various Animal Production Ventures.
  4. Jobs with International Agricultural Organisations like Food And Agricultural Organisations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Internal Bereaux for Animal Research (IBAR), etc.

  6. Extension and Rural Sociology.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidates must present a proposal defense seminar between 18 and 24 for full time, 24 and 36 calendar months for part time, 30 and 40 calendar months of first registration and failure to this will result in withdrawal.
  2. Pass 2 units of ICT and Management Entrepreneurial studies courses if not taken at a lower post graduate programe.
  3. Present 3 seminars at most one per semester. Defend a research Thesis before a panel of Internal and External Examiners and this will be graded.
