PhD. LANGUAGE EDUCATION
Philosophy
The overall philosophy of postgraduate programmes in Education is the development of professional educators who are social engineers of change through education either as professional teachers, researchers or managers of educational institutions and end- user organisations. This is therefore set to develop those types of effective, efficient and proficient personnel in language teaching and learning.
Aim
The aim is to develop high level manpower in language education that is knowledgable and can provide leadership in professional practice and intellectual competence in English language education.
Objective
The specific objectives are to:
- develop professional expertise in language education
- produce educators who are knowledgeable in and committed to the implementation of the language component of the National Policy on Education.
- develop competent researchers in language education in Nigerian Education system.
- produce educators who can make Nigerian learners of English relevant in a global context.
Admission Requirements
- Five ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and three other relevant subjects.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education in not below Second Class Lower Division of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognised institution.
- Masters Degree in Education (Language Education) of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or its equivalent from other recognised institution with a CGPA of not less than 4.0 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.
- Graduates of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto who have been upgraded to Ph. D through Master of Philosophy Programme in Language Education.
- In addition to (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) above, a candidate must satisfy the university’s requirements for matriculation.
Any other qualifications which are acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and the Senate of the University.
Mode of Study
- The programme shall run on full time basis involving course work, seminar presentations and research work to be embodied in thesis
Duration
The full-time will run for a minimum of 36 and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
Tuition Fees
As may be determined by the University Authority from time to time.

Graduation Requirements
- Submit and successfully defend a research proposal within 18-24 months from registration.
- Register and pass 46 Credit units of taught causes comprising of:
- Core courses 12 credit units
- 18 units of elective from area of specialisation
- 16 units of Thesis
- Seminar
- Student shall defend a thesis 16 credit units before a panel of internal and external panel examiners, and the thesis shall be graded.
- Present minimum of three seminar papers, at most one per semester.
