Prof. M. T. Dansabo
Brief Biography
Professor Muhammad Tasiu Dansabo, a Professor of Sociology of Development is the former Head of the Sociology Department, at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He is 52 years old, a native of Zaria, Kaduna State (Nigeria) and has been married for 27 years. He is a father of 8 children with two wives. He is proficient in both written and oral Hausa, English, and Arabic languages. He is a holder of a Ph.D. Degree in Sociology of Development. Other qualifications he obtained include a Primary School Leaving Certificate in 1985, a Senior Secondary School Certificate in 1992, a Certificate in Bio-Medical Engineering in 1991, a Senior Certificate in Arabic in 2005, an advanced diploma in Public Administration in 1997 Diploma in Computer Studies 2000, Diploma in Arabic 2017. He obtained his first degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1998; a Master's Degree in Sociology and an MPhil Degree in Political Science from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and Ph.D. Degree in Sociology from Nasarawa State University, Keffi in 2014. In 1997 he taught Social Studies as a Student-Teacher at Barewa College, Zaria. In 1999 he served at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Gusau where he taught Sociology of Education and held the office of the President of, the Muslim Corpers’ Association of Nigeria (MCAN), Zamfara State. He once worked as the pioneer Head of the General Studies Division of the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Bakura, and a lecturer of Citizenship Education, Rural Sociology and Research Methods from 2000-2003. He was once the Northwest zonal coordinator of the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association. He is a member of many professional and academic bodies such as the International Sociological Association ISA, Nigerian Anthropological & Sociological Practitioners Association NASA, and an Associate Member- Nigerian Psychological Association. In January 2004 he joined the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto where he has been handling courses in the Sociology of Development, Sociological Theory, Political Sociology, Sociology of Education, Social Psychology, Rural Sociology, Conflict and Non-violent Change, Formal and Complex Organizations, Sociology of the Third World, Sociology of Industry, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to African Societies and Cultures, Social Inequality, Islamic Social Thought, Islamic Social Order & Institutions, Language, Culture and Society, Sociology of the Family, Nigerian Heritage and Social Anthropology. At the postgraduate level, he handles Social Change & Development, Sociology of Development, Social inequalities and poverty Eradication, Policies of Rural Development, and Sociology of Industry. In addition, he taught courses in Crime prevention, management, and Control under the Diploma programme of the Department of Sociology, UDUS, and courses on Nigerian Government and Politics, Culture and Cultural Identity, Social Interaction in Nigeria, Problems in Society and Family-based Structure of Society under the BED Part-time programme of the Faculty of Education, UDUS. He served as the Examinations Officer- Department of Sociology, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto from 2004-2006 and as Postgraduate Coordinator of the Department from 2016 to January 2018. He supervised quite a several undergraduate projects; 4 Ph.D. and 39 Masters Dissertations to completion. He has published extensively in both local and international journals and contributed chapters in books, in addition to attending conferences, seminars, and workshops (Local & International). He secured research grants from the Center for Research on Inequality and Human Security (CRISE), University of Oxford, UK, French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA- IBADAN) Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, and Tetfund. He has been a visiting lecturer with the Department of Sociology, Sokoto State University, and Al-Qalam University, Katsina. In January 2018 he secured a sabbatical leave with the Department of Sociology, Sokoto State University, and served as the Acting Head from January 2018 to January 2019. He became the Acting Head of the Sociology Department, at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto from July 2019 to July 2023. He is presently the External Examiner to the Department of Sociology, Federal University Gusau.RELEVANT EXPERIENCE/SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENTS
His areas of teaching and research lie in the areas of Sociology of Development, Social Psychology, Poverty, Intergroup Relations, Sociological Theory, Sociology of Industry, Islamic Social thought, and Health Sociology. He has many articles published in Local and International Journals, conducted a lot of empirical and theoretical studies in these areas, and attended International and Local workshops and seminars. In 1997 he conducted a study on the Socio- cultural Implication of the Adoption of Family Planning in Hausa land and in 1998 he conducted a study on the Role of Education in Enhancing women's Empowerment in Zaria LGA. In 2004 he conducted a study on Spatial Location and utilization of Health care services in Rural Areas: A study of Bakura LGA, Zamfara State. In 2005 he conducted a study on Western Education, Muslim Identity and Female Schooling: A study of Asama’u Girls’ Islamic College, Sokoto. In 2013 he conducted a study on Host-Migrant community relations in Sokoto Metropolis and in 2014 he conducted a study on an Assessment of the Developmental Impact of Poverty Reduction Programmes in Sokoto State-Nigeria (A PhD thesis) In 2006 he secured a research grant from the Center for Research on Inequality and Human Security CRISE, University of Oxford, the UK where he studied Indigene Settler Relations in Sokoto Metropolis. Similarly, in 2010 he secured another Research grant from the French Institute of Research in Africa IFRA where he studied the Sunni-Shi’i crises in Sokoto. He also engaged in several consultancy services notably; Environmental & Social Impact Assessment for the Middle Rima Valley Irrigation Scheme Project with Goronyo Dam 2015-2017(Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria TRIMING Project- World Bank assisted project) (Consultant- Sociologist/ Socio-economist) and Resettlement Action Plan Implementation for Hadejia Valley Irrigation Scheme, Jigawa State-Nigeria (Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria Project- World Bank assisted project) (Team Lead). He was a Team Lead in a project on Livelihood Needs Assessment- Katsina Sate Erosion and Watershed Management Project NEWMAP- World Bank assisted project (Consultant Sociologist/ Team Lead for CALIPH TECHNO) (1 st August-10 th November 2019) and also a Domestic Consultant, and sociologist of the "Support for the elaboration of State Development Plan for Sokoto State” UNICEF Nigeria- COSMOS Consulting Benin Republic. He was a UNICEF Consultant who supported Sokoto State's realising equity-based and gender-focus situation analysis of children from 2019 to 2020 and also a UNICEF Consultant to supported Zamfara State's realising equity-based and gender- focus situation analysis of children. He also served as a Consultant for IOM on the Perception study of interactions, interdependence and mutual perceptions between the Border Communities of Illela and Gada (Sokoto State); Maigatari (Jigawa State) and Kongolam and Koza; Kawurin Kudi Katsina State) in Northwestern Nigeria and Law Enforcement, Immigration/Border, Criminal Justice Sector and Protection Agencies and Assessment of Livelihood opportunities (International Organization for Migration -IOM Consultant 20 th October 2021- 28 th February 2022) and Engagement with border communities to ensure ownership and sustainability of interventions through regular meetings or support to existing coordination structures, including on a bilateral basis (August 1, 2022). He was a Principal Investigator of a research titled: 'Gender-Sensitive Situation Analysis: A Study on Gender and Girl-child Access to Education in Sokoto State' Tetfund IBR sponsored research, 2022. He is also a member of an ongoing Tetfund NRF Research team researching ‘Governance Deficit, Banditry & Crises of Development in Northwestern Nigeria 1999-2021’. This is in addition to several works he served as a Research Assistant. Within the academic circle, he was the pioneer Head of, the General Studies Division of the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Bakura and the Departmental Examinations Officer (Department of Sociology, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto) and representative of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the Board of Faculty of Law Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto from 2004-2006. He was the representative of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the Strategic Planning Committee and the Departmental PG Coordinator (2016-2018) at, the Department of Sociology, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. In the same vein, in 2007- 2008 he earned an award of excellence in teaching from the Faculty of Social Sciences Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Similarly, in 2018, he was also given a letter of commendation as the Ag. HOD SSU by the Dean, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, SSU for outstanding performance.
