Prof. M.G. Mahuta
Brief Biography
MUHAMMAD GARBA MAHUTA was born on 1st January, 1964 in Mahuta, Fakai Local Government of Kebbi State. He obtained Grade II Teachers’ Certificate from Government Teachers’ College, Zuru. He hold B.A. Ed. (Islamic Studies) from University of Sokoto and M.Ed. (Sociology of Education), Ph.D. (Sociology of Education) from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He has published over fifty (50) articles in Academic Journals, in the areas of Sociology of Education generally and Gender in Education, Nomadic Education, Minority Education and Teacher Education in Particular.He is a Professor of Sociology of Education in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education and Extension Services, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto with thirty five (35) years of Teaching, Research, Undergraduate and Postgraduate supervision experience. He was promoted to the rank of Professor on 1st October, 2010. He has been Teaching and engaged in supervision of Undergraduate and Postgraduate for over three decades in the area of Sociology of Education. He has authored two Text books, namely: “An introduction to Sociological Foundation of Education (2007)” and “An introduction to the Teaching Profession for Teacher- Trainees (2009)”. He has supervised five (5) Ph.D. and sixty five (65) M.Ed. Students of Sociology of Education as Major Supervisor.
He participated in the writing of Nomadic Education pupils Text Books for Islamic Studies for Primary 1-6. and also participated in several seminars and workshops organized by the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE) from 1998- to date. He received a National Universities Commission, 2002 Nigerian Universities Doctoral Thesis Award in recognition of the outstanding research work documented in his Doctor of Philosophy Degree Thesis. He also received the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Postgraduate Award as the Most Outstanding Research Work at Ph.D Level Recognized by National Universities Commission (NUC), Ph.D in Sociology of Education, 2002.
He served as Departmental Postgraduate Coordinator, Department of Education 2006 – 2008, Faculty Postgraduate Coordinator, Faculty of Education and Extension Services, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto 2011 – 2014, Coordinator, Nomadic Education Curriculum Development Centre, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto 2008–2015, Member, Presidential Visitation Panel for Federal Colleges of Education and Polytechnics (Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnics, Nwana, Ebonyi State) 2012, Member, Presidential Committee on Needs Assessment of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria 2013. He is External Examiner and served as External Assessor for nine (9) Readers and eight (8) Professors from different universities. He is member of various academic and professional organisations namely:Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE), Association of Sociologists of Education of Nigeria (ASEN), Association for the Promotion of Academic Excellence in Tertiary Institutions of Nigeria (APAETIN). He was Head of Department of Educational Foundations, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto from May, 2016 to August, 2019, He was Director, Division of General Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto from July, 2019 to December, 2021.
He is currently, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
He is happily married with eleven (11) children.
