Prof. Rufai Muftau


Brief Biography

He studied Law from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and graduated in 1990. He had his BL in 1991, an joined the services of Usmanu Dan fodiyo University, Sokoto, in 1993 as an Assistant Lecturer. He had his LL. M and Ph. D degrees from ABU, Zaria, in 1998 and 2007 respectively. He rose to the rank of a Professor of Law in 2013.
Among his academic activities are : Supervision of Undergraduate Projects, (since 1993 to date), supervision of Master of Laws (LL. M) Dissertations, Faculty of Law, (since 2007 till date), participation in Ph. D seminar presentations (since 2007 till date), participation as Internal Examiner for Master of Laws (LL.. M) students (since 2007 till date), supervision of Ph. D Thesis (since 2011 till date).
Some of his administrative responsibilities in the University include: Representative of HOD, Dept. of Public Law (1993/1994), Member, Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee (1994/1995), Assistant Hall Master, Student’s Hostel, City Campus (1994/1996), Academic Adviser, Faculty of Law Students (400 level, 1998 till 2000), Faculty Project Coordinator (1998 till 2000), Member, Committee of Inquiry on Financial Mismanagement of UDULSA’s Funds (1998/1999), Staff Adviser, Law Students’ Association, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, 2008 till 2013. His activities outside the University are: Treasurer, NBA Sokoto Branch (1998 till 2000), Auditor, NBA, Sokoto Branch (2000 till 2002), Provost, NBA, Sokoto Branch, (2004 till 2006), He is a Member, Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), 2009 till date. Member, Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN) 2010 till date. He is a Member, Coordinating Committee on a three-day Workshop on the Legal Roles and Responsibilities of Local Government Chairmen, Councilors and Secretaries, held at Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, 2000. Secretary, Coordinating Committee on a three-day Workshop on the Legal Roles and Responsibilities of Local Government Chairmen, Councilors and Secretaries, held at Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, 2000. Others are: Member, Council of Legal Education, Abuja (September 2013), Member, Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee of the Council of Legal Education, Abuja (September, 2013), Expert member of the Editor’s Working Group on the Revision of the Laws of Federation (2019).
Membership of Professional Bodies: They include Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), National Association of Law Teachers (NALT), Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), Teachers Registration Council (TRC), National Association of Law Teachers (NALT).
Conferences and Workshops attended: He has attended many local conferences such as Annual Conference of National Association of Law Teachers (NALT) at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos, 1994, Annual Conference of National Association of Law Teachers (NALT), at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, 1998, Annual General/Delegates Conference, National Bar Association (NBA), Abuja, 22-27, Aug. 2004, Annual Conference of National Association of Law Teachers (NALT) at Abia State University, 2009.
Workshops Attended include : A 3-Day workshop on the Legal Roles and Responsibilities of Local Government Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, Councillors and Secretary, held at Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State (2000), NBA/CLE Functions, held at Shukura Hotel, Sokoto (2009), A 2-Day Capacity Building Workshop on Research Methodology and Grantsmanship, U. D. U. Sokoto, (6-7 May, 2013).
The courses taught at Undergraduate level include Law of Evidence, Conflict of Laws and Criminal Law. The courses taught at Postgraduate Level are Law of Armed Conflict and Digital Evidence Law.
Community service: They include Chairman, Constitutional Drafting Committee, Kwara State Indigenes Association, Sokoto State Branch (2006 till 2007), Staff Adviser, Kwara State Law Students’s Association, UDUS Chapter (2008 till date), Chairman, Ilorin Descendants Progressive Union (IDPU), Sokoto State Branch, (2009 till 2013), Collation Officer, 2011 Presidential/Senatorial Election in Sokoto State. Collation Officer, 2012 Governorship Election in Sokoto State.
The courses taught at Undergraduate level include Law of Evidence, Conflict of Laws and Criminal Law. At the Postgraduate Level, he takes Law of Armed Conflict and Digital Evidence Law.
