Prof. Yusuf Saidu


Brief Biography

Yusuf Saidu is a Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry with the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) Nigeria. He graduated in 1990 with B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, winning the Northco Holdings prize for the best graduating student in biochemistry. He obtained M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Jos in 1994 with distinction and had his PhD in Biochemistry from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto in 2005. Yusuf joins the services of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University as an Assistant Lecturer in 1998 and rose to become a Professor in 2012. He was a Commonwealth Visiting Scholar/Fellow at the Strathclyde Innovations in Drug Research (SIDR), Strathclyde Institute for Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom from October 2008 to March 2009 and currently a Visiting Professor with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Federal University, Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), where he helped establish the Department. He was the Faculty of Science Postgraduate Coordinator (2009-2012), Deputy Dean of the Postgraduate School (2012-2014), and Acting Dean (April 2013 to April 2014) Postgraduate School, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He was the University Deputy SIWES Coordinator (2009-2013). Professor Saidu was the Head, Department of Biochemistry, UDUS (2018-2020) and the pioneer Head of Department, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Federal University Birnin Kebbi. Professor Saidu was the Director Research, Innovation and Development, UDUS and member of the University Council representing Convocation. He is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He was a member of TETFUND Standing Committee on Research and Development and National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee. He is also a member of Education and Training Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Professor Saidu is widely published with about 100 papers and three (3) patents to his credit. He has presented papers at conferences across the globe, including those organised by the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biochemical Society of the United Kingdom and International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He was the Financial Secretary of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2015 to 2019) and the Secretary General of Toxinology Society of Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (FNSBMB). Prof. Saidu has served as Publication Editor (2005-2008) and Business Editor (2009-March 2017) of the Nigerian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, and currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal. He is on the Editorial Board of Sokoto Journal of Veterinary Sciences, and Nigerian Journal of Biotechnology. Prof. Saidu has attracted research grants from the Education Trust Fund (now Tertiary Education Trust Fund), Abuja Nigeria, International Foundation for Science (IFS), Sweden, Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and Science and Technology Education Post Basic (STEP-B). His research interests are in the areas of oxidative stress and pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus/hypertension; elucidation of mechanism of action of medicinal plants use for the management of diabetes mellitus and infant and preschool child nutrition. He is widely travelled, and has visited countries including United Kingdom, Holland, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Morocco, Ghana, Niger Republic, Egypt, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. He is happily married and the marriage blessed with children.
