Usman Salisu Batagarawa

Brief Biography

Usman is a self-driven, passionate and aspiring Molecular Biologist and Biotechnologist with keen interest in the molecular biology of infectious disease pathogens and vectors of medical and veterinary importance. Focusing on their surveillance, biology, genetic diversity, epidemiology, ecology, control, and role in disease pathogenicity and transmission. He works and strive toward establishing an outstanding research career in arbovirology, vector-Borne, emerging, re-emerging, zoonotic and neglected tropical infectious diseases, and contributing in reducing their burden in Nigeria and globally. He is currently a PhD Fellow at the African Center of Excellence on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology, ABU Zaria, a co-PI and a Visiting Scientist at the Viral Disease Branch, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Silver Spring, Maryland, USA working on “Metagenomic arboviral surveillance and novel pathogen discovery from mosquito vectors and their molecular insecticide resistance”. He has a running Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETFUND) Institution Based Research grant studying the molecular Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance in plasmodium falciparum among pregnant women. More so, he currently work on:  metagenomic novel-pathogen discovery from other arthropods vectors (culicoides and ticks) utilizing novel high-throughput Next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics 3 pipeline  molecular epidemiology and characterization of native midgut microbiome, Wolbachia in field mosquitoes  genotyping malaria parasites  Bats ecology, their viral diversity and potential threat to humans  Molecular surveillance and characterization of fish-borne zoonotic diseases
