Brief Biography
Yusuf Abdulazeez is a Lecturer I and was born in Kontagora, Niger State, Nigeria, where he had primary and secondary education. He attended Federal College of Education, Kontagora and Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), where he obtained Nigeria Certificate in Education (Social and Islamic Studies) in 1997 and B.Sc. degree Sociology in 2000 respectively. Mr. Abdulazeez bagged an M.Sc. degree Sociology in 2005 from the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State and served as a Graduate Assistant in University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University), Ekiti State during his NYSC period. After the NYSC, he taught briefly in Faz-l-Omar Nursery and Primary School in Oke-Ado, Ibadan and was employed in UDUS in 2005. He has served as a part-time lecturer at the Sokoto State University (SSU), Sokoto, Nigeria from 2017 to 2020. With social policy direction, his research interests span through peace, conflict, criminological and security studies, including social problems. He has taught different courses in mainstream sociology, particularly ‘Introduction to sociology,’ ‘Social statistics,’ ‘Social change,’ ‘Sociology of the family,’ ‘Social structure of Nigerian society,’ ‘Gender and society,’ ‘Social problems,’ ‘Political sociology,’ ‘Social movements,’ ‘Social policy, planning and administration,’ ‘Sociological theories,’ and ‘Models in sociological analysis’ and a number of sociology’s allied courses such as ‘Introduction to psychology,’ ‘Child development psychology’, ‘Social work,’ ‘Applied demography,’ ‘Regional ethnography of Sub-Saharan Africa,’ ‘African societies and cultures’ and ‘Peace and conflict studies’. Many diploma and bachelor degree project students have been guided under his supervision and he has contributed to a few postgraduate dissertations as a seminar attendee, co-supervisor or internal examiner. Mr. Abdulazeez has presented papers in local and international conferences and had won conference grants from the International Sociological Association’s (ISA) Research Committee 19 (Poverty, Social Welfare and Social Policy) for its Annual Conference on “Social Exclusion and the Challenges of Inclusion: Social Policies Addressing Intersecting Inequalities” held in August 2013 at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary and from the Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies (AEGIS) for the 4th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) co-organised by the Nordic African Institute (NAI) and AEGIS held at the Ekonokium, Uppsala, Sweden in June, 2011. He also secured sponsorship from the organisers of the 7th Iberian Conference on African Studies co-organised by the Centre for African Studies of the Lisbon University Institute and the University of Porto held at Lisbon, Portugal in September, 2010. In September 2006, he was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran for the 16th International Conference on the Persian Gulf held at University of Tehran. He was also a grantee of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for the 3rd African Conference of the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health Research Alliance held at Dakar, Senegal in October 2005.
Mr. Abdulazeez participated in many capacity building programmes, specifically “The Northwest Zonal Dissemination and Training Workshop on the State of Implementation of the Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education (FLHE) Curricula in Nigeria” organised by the Ibadan Social and Evaluation Research Team (ISERT) held at Dankanni Guest Inn, Sokoto in April, 2017. Also, he was in “An Interactive Session on the Integration of Experiential Learning Activity (ELA) into GST Course on Peace and Conflict Studies” organised by the Centre for Peace Studies (CPS), UDUS and School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University, USA with Support from US Institute of Peace held at UDUS in February, 2016. He was trained on “Students Online Registration Portal (EduERP)” by UDUNet at UDUS ICT Centre on June, 2015. In October 2015, he attended “An Interactive Session on GST Course on Peace and Conflict Studies” organised by the CPS, UDUS. He was a participant in “The 8th Forum on Crime and Policing in Malaysia” organised by Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (Penang Chapter) School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia Penang Police Contigent, Polis Diraja Malaysia in December, 2012. He was a recipient of the “Sexuality Leadership Development Fellowship” organised by the African Regional Resource Centre, Lagos from June to July, 2011. In November, 2008, he was trained on “Conflict Management and Resolution: Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Effective Communication Techniques” by the CPS, UDUS with the Support of US Embassy, Nigeria held at UDUS. Mr. Abdulazeez was a participant in the “International Summer School on Feminisms and the Politics of Gender Identity in Africa: Finding a Common Ground” co-organised by UDUS and Freie Univertaet, Berlin, Germany held at Sokoto Energy Research Centre, UDUS from August to September, 2007. He has the ability to use internet resources and services, and also to work with Microsoft (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and to apply Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) in quantitative data analysis and N-Vivo software in analysing qualitative data.
